Our Areas of Expertise
Restoration
Restoration is defined as the art of putting or bringing “back into a former or original state.” The look and integrity of an original finish on an item is a welcome sight in our business. With proper knowledge and care, items can often be preserved or restored to this state, often with out refinishing.
Historically correct finishes and treatments can be of value, properly preserving items for future generations. Many items that have retained a level of originality can be maintained or restored to a look and feel appropriate to the time in history from whence they came. The look and finish of a piece or surface can often be refurbished utilizing these historically correct finishes, products and techniques. This treatment is recommended when at all possible.
Repair
Structural and cosmetic repairs are common for furnishings and wooden surfaces after years of use and, sometimes, abuse. Adhesives will degrade over time and loose their effectiveness. Often times, we see nails and screws and other items placed in furnishings in an attempt to repair or restore an item’s usability. These will commonly cause further and more serious damage to items they are installed in.
I prefer to remove inadequate repair attempts and incorporate proper, time tested techniques to preserve these wooden treasures. Adequate or sound repairs of old are left intact as they represent a part in the history of a piece or wooden surface, unless they are particularly bothersome to the customer.
Due diligence is applied in all repair work to maintain its integrity, but repairs are also made reversible whenever possible in case a conservation approach is undertaken on articles of particular historical value at some time in the future.
Refinishing
Some wooden surfaces and pieces of furniture will have reached a state where it is not economically feasible or practical to restore, requiring a more drastic approach to save them. Refinishing enables a wooden surface to return to a look and state complimentary of “its maker’s intent,” fully revealing its true visual potential.
Furniture placed in our homes is expected to be used. A degraded, protective finish on such a piece is only contributing to its demise. The same can be said for the wooden surfaces all around our homes and businesses. This is when the refinishing approach is the only option.
All attempts will be made to preserve the look and feel of a gently aged piece of furniture. A mentor of mine likes to apply the quote, “We repair the abuse, but save the use.” By application and technique, along with the use of historically correct products and finishes, this end can be achieved at the hands of a skilled re-finisher.
